Posthumous Glory For Street Cry In Australia

Winx a late star for Street Cry | Sharon Chapman

The late Darley sire Street Cry (Ire) (Machiavellian) has been crowned champion sire in Australia as the 2015-16 season drew to a close yesterday.

The winner of the G1 Dubai World Cup and GI Stephen Foster H. in the blue of Godolphin, Street Cry retired to Jonabell Farm in Kentucky in 2003. Initial shuttle stints to Darley Australia's Northwood Park Farm in Seymour produced some notable runners, including the 2009 G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup hero Shocking (Aus) and G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Whobegotyou (Aus). Following a two-year hiatus from travelling, Street Cry resumed Southern Hemisphere coverings from Kelvinside in the Hunter Valley in 2009, his second tour of duty resulting in the outstanding mare Winx (Aus).

The Chris Waller-trained six-time Group 1 winner was responsible for almost half her sire's earnings and headed an impressive cast for Street Cry throughout this season, with G1 Caulfield 1000 Guineas winner Stay With Me (Aus), dual Group 1 runner-up Ambience (Aus), and dual Group 2 winner winner Tally (Aus) adding to a prize-money haul fractionally shy of A$13 million from 173 runners and 85 winners. Street Cry, who died in November 2014, becomes the first imported stallion since Danehill in 2004-05 to lead the Australian general sires' list.

Not far behind him in the rankings was Arrowfield Stud's Not A Single Doubt (Aus) (Redoute's Choice), who headed the list by number of winners, his 154 to grace the winner's enclosure this season amassing earnings of A$12,481,561. Group 1 winners Single Gaze (Aus), Extreme Choice (Ire) and Good Project (Aus) led the pack of 12 stakes winners.

Woodside Park Stud's Written Tycoon (Aus) (Iglesia {Aus}) took third in the general sires' list and also had the honour of being named leading sire of 2-year-olds, with his stand-out juvenile being the 'TDN Rising Star' G1 Golden Slipper and Magic Millions Classic winner Capitalist (Aus).

Previous champions Fastnet Rock (Aus) (Danehill), Lonhro (Aus) (Octagonal {NZ}), Encosta De Lago (Aus) (Fairy King) and Redoute's Choice (Aus) (Danehill) filled the next four positions in the table, with Snitzel (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}), Sebring (Aus) (More Than Ready) and Choisir (Aus) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) completing the top 10. Encosta De Lago was named champion broodmare sire, with the earnings of his daughters' offspring propelling his almost A$2-million clear of Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram {GB}) in this category.

In a tight contest to be leading freshman, the Fastnet Rock stallion Smart Missile (Aus) just shaded Love Conquers All (Aus) (Mossman {Aus}), his earnings standing at A$453,805 from seven winners, just $330 ahead of his rival. Dream Ahead (Diktat {GB}), who shuttles from Ireland's Ballylinch Stud to Emirates Park, finished in third place with four winners from just 20 runners.

Love Conquers All–boasting an impressive strike-rate of 36.4%–and Sidereus (Aus) (General Nediym {Aus}) took the contest on number of individual winners, with eight apiece, while the shuttlers Foxwedge (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) sired six and five first-crop winners, respectively.

Hinchinbrook (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who stands at Yarraman Park Stud, was the leading second-crop sire for 2015-16, with G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Press Statement (Aus) being among his five stakes winner for the year.
