Similar to a list compiled ahead of last year's Keeneland September sale that included next-out GIII Iroquois S. romper and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Not This Time (Giant's Causeway); subsequent GI FrontRunner S. hero Gormley (Malibu Moon); and recently named 'TDN Rising Star' Parlor (Lonhro {Aus}), here are a number of lightly raced, promising runners with siblings set to sell at next week's OBS March sale. Note that this list is not exhaustive and does not include graded winners like last week's GIII Palm Beach S. victor Ticonderoga (Tapit), whose full-sister is catalogued as hip 637.
DARIA'S ANGEL (f, 3, Gemologist–R Charlie's Angel, by Indian Charlie) O-Wayne R Sanders & Larry Hirsch. B-Hargus & Sandra Sexton & Silver Fern Farm LLC (KY). T-William Bret Calhoun.
Runner-up in a pair of sprints at two, Daria's Angel was stretched to an extended mile at Fair Grounds Feb. 18, went right to the front and never looked back en route to a wrapped-up eight-length victory (video). The dark bay's final clocking was almost two-fifths of a second faster than well-regarded 'Rising Star' Souper Tapit (Tapit), albeit with drastically different trips. Daria's Angel's Quality Road half-brother, a $140,000 Keeneland September yearling, covered an eighth in :10 2/5 during Thursday's breeze show, and will be offered by Eisaman Equine as hip 113.
MIDDLE KINGDOM (c, 3, War Front–River Belle {GB}), by Lahib) O-China Horse Club. B-Lofts Hall Stud (KY). T-John Gosden.
This 775,000gns TATOCT yearling dwelt at the break of his about-one-mile debut over the Newcastle all-weather Nov. 25, but leveled off very nicely to win going away by 3 1/2 lengths (video). Imagine… offers a full-brother to that colt as hip 133. He breezed in :10 4/5 and is out of MGSW/GISP River Belle, making the War Front colts half-brothers to GSW/GISP Strathnaver (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).
FLORIDA FABULOUS (f, 3, High Cotton–West Side Dancer, by Gone West) O-e Five Racing Thoroughbreds. B-Ocala Stud (FL). T-David Fawkes.
Backed down to 1-2 facing Florida-bred fillies at a mile at Gulfstream Feb. 16, this $400,000 OBS April grad couldn't have won any more easily, cruising to the line 10 3/4 lengths clear and garnering 'TDN Rising Star' status (video). The bay is a half-sister to speedy GSWs Discreet Dancer (Discreeet Cat) and Travelin Man (Trippi), as well as OBSMAR entrant hip 295, a filly by Scat Daddy consigned by breeder Ocala Stud.
THE MONEY MONSTER (c, 3, Majestic Warrior–Awesomekaylee, by Awesome Again) O-R A Hill & BlackRidge Stable. B-Ginny McKinlay, et al (KY). T-William I Mott.
Just a $6,500 OBS April purchase, The Money Monster came out running for co-owner and trainer Rohan Crichton and Cheryl Baker to don cap and gown at Gulfstream Park West Nov. 20, and doubled up with a game victory in Tampa's seven-furlong Pasco S. Jan. 21 (video). These new connections saw fit to step in and purchase the colt privately, and he'll take a major step up in class in Saturday's GII Tampa Bay Derby. His Mizzen Mast half-brother (hip 358) sells next week with Flying Fish.
AWESOME SATURDAY (c, 3, Any Given Saturday–Brucie, by Fusaichi Pegasus) O-Chuck Hovitz. B-Craig L Minten (KY). T-William Bret Calhoun.
This first-out winner at Fair Grounds Feb. 25 didn't break any records time wise, but ran a sneaky good race and blew past a well-backed $1.1-million yearling by 2 1/4 lengths (video). The $32,000 KEESEP buy got shuffled back sharply turning for home, but made a big, willing run to kick back in and draw off. A Take Charge Indy half-sister to Awesome Saturday sells with Mayberry Farm as hip 404. She was a $60,000 OBS August yearling.
SINE WAVE (f, 3, Big Brown–Curlina, by Cuvee) O-Jeremiah Kane. B-John & Martha Jane Mulholland (KY). T-Benjamin W Perkins, Jr.
A narrow first-out winner at Laurel Dec. 10, this $100,000 OBSAPR juvenile was sluggish early as the 13-10 choice in a Parx optional claimer Feb. 4, and appeared to be climbing and struggling to handle the track before rushing up the rail willingly to strike the front into the bend. She kept on well from there to hit the line 7 3/4 lengths clear while geared down (video). Brick City Thoroughbreds has a Scat Daddy half-brother to that filly catalogued as hip 474.
BRONZE AGE (c, 3 Mineshaft–Gasp, by Hennessy) O-Juddmonte Farms. B-Gasp Breeding Syndicate LLC (KY). T-Bob Baffert.
This $600,000 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream purchase last year faded after dueling through very swift fractions in a pair of sprints to kick off his career. Able to enjoy a bit more separation when stretched to a mile at Santa Anita Feb. 18, he blew the race apart turning for home and kept on to win by daylight over a debuting stablemate, earning a 93 Beyer Speed Figure in the process (video). Eddie Woods consigns a Gemologist half-brother ($60,000 KEESEP) to the Juddmonte colorbearer as
hip 555.
CHILLY SILVER (f, 3, Malibu Moon–Jacey's Reward, by Johannesburg) O-Kazumi Yoshida. B-Glencrest Farm LLC (KY). T-Kiyoshi Hagiwara.
Unveiled over a grassy mile at Kyoto Jan. 17, this $240,000 Barretts March acquisition tracked the pace, ranged up wide and kicked on with a burst of energy to win by 1 3/4 lengths (video). “She has a big stride, so she took a little time to respond my urging, but she showed strong acceleration in the stretch,” offered winning pilot Christophe Lemaire. “From a pedigree perspective, she seems suited to dirt, but she has lots of talent and will handle added distance. She is very easy to ride.” Chilly Silver is entered back at Chukyo on Saturday, and her Bodemeister half-brother is consigned by Whitman Sales LLC, Agent V as hip 625. Their dam is a half-sister to three-time Grade I-winning grasser Magical Fantasy (Diesis {GB}).
