Proud Spell (f, 4, Proud Citizen) was sent off the 1-5 chalk in Thursday's ninth race allowance at Oaklawn Park, but couldn't quite summon the late response and settled for second to the pacesetting Superior Storm (f, 4, Stormy Atlantic). A stalking third and in with every chance rounding the far turn, Proud Spell could not reel in the frontrunner, who was coming off a victory in the Premier Distaff S. for Louisiana-breds at Delta Downs. Superior Storm spurted away in the stretch and was two lengths clear under the line. Final time for the 8 1/2 furlongs was 1:46.71. Proud Spell, the reigning Eclipse Award-winning three-year-old filly, was using Thursday's race as a prep for the GI Apple Blossom H. Apr. 4.
