A session featuring Book 2 yearlings and racing prospects grossed A$1.56 million as the Magic Millions National Sale came to a close Thursday at the Gold Coast. Over the course of the last two-plus weeks, a total of 1636 horses of all ages were reported as sold for gross receipts of A$144.3 million, improving on the corresponding figure from 2016 by a whopping A$37 million or 35%.

“The National Sale has closed out with a gross which all but equalled the gross from our record breaking January Yearling Sale of $146 million and far surpassing the $107 million of the 2016 National Sale,” commented Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox. “We started selling 15 days ago and in that time we've seen many people come and go. Everyone has played a significant part in what has been an outstanding couple of weeks on the Gold Coast.

He added, “The vendors and their staff, buyers, Magic Millions team, bar and wait staff, grounds and night crews, however special mention to the transport companies and their staff for what was an unprecedented logistical exercise, to turn the place around three times is a fantastic performance.”

The average price for each weanling, broodmare, yearling and horse of racing age finished at A$88,230, an improvement of 15% over 2016, when fewer lots were offered.

An untried filly by Stratum (lot 2463) from the family of the good sire Commands (Aus) topped Thursday's round of bidding on a final bid of A$100,000 from trainer Paul Perry.

“It was great to see such strong competition on the racehorses today. It proves that live auction is the most effective way to market racehorses,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox noted.

Next up on the Magic Millions sales calendar is the Perth Winter Yearling, Thoroughbred and Racehorse Sale June 25.
