Red Giant (c, 4, Giant's Causeway–Beyond the Sun, by Kingmambo), who had been pre-entered in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, has been retired after he was discovered to have a fever this morning. ì[His trainer] Todd [Pletcher] said there was no way he could work this morning or for three or four days,î said his owner John Fort of Peachtree Venture. ìHe was to be retired after the Breeders' Cup anyway.î According to Fort, there are no definite stud plans for Red Giant, who ìhas generated a lot of interest from Australia, Japan, Argentina and Europeî after setting a world record for 1 1/4 miles on turf in his most recent start, the GI Clement L. Hirsch Turf Championship Sept. 27. The 2007 GII Virginia Derby winner retires with a record of 12-6-3-1 and $1,092,410 in earnings.
