Some of Germany's prime G1 Deutsches Derby contenders are on show at Munich on Monday, with the G3 Bavarian Classic on trainer Andreas Wohler's agenda as he seeks an overall sixth and third consecutive renewal. Qatar Racing's Warring States (Jpn) (Victoire Pisa {Jpn}) appears to be the pick of his trio despite finishing only 10th of 13 in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud when last seen in October. That race has already yielded two of 2017's early Derby trial winners in Cunco (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}), so it would be no surprise to see another here. Markus Klug provides the main opposition with a smart duo in Gestut Wittekindshof's Cologne debut scorer Northsea Star (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and Newsells Park Stud and Gestut Rottgen's Kastano (Ger) (Nathaniel {Ire}). He was second to stable companion Colomano (GB) (Cacique {Ire}) in the G3 Hezog von Ratibor-Rennen at Krefeld in November, but may need to improve on that bare form after the winner was subsequently put in his place in last week's G3 Dr. Busch-Memorial.
