CHIEF ISTAN (c, 4, Istan–My Indian, by Indian Charlie) was hammered down into 1-2 favoritism while looking to remain perfect in three career starts and got the job done by a diminishing one-length margin. The bay colt debuted in the colors of his breeder in a single appearance at two in 2014, dismantling a field of Delaware maidens by 7 1/2 lengths that September before hitting the shelf. He resumed the following April with Kevin Plank's Sagamore Farm now involved in a non-two-lifetime allowance at Keeneland last April and the results were equally convincing, as he led throughout to take it by 8 3/4 lengths and become a 'TDN Rising Star.' Drawn on the fence for this 4-year-old return, Chief Istan was second early on and was guided out into the two path to stalk the early pace. Allowed to amble up to challenge for the lead turning for home, he put daylight on his rivals, but began to drift late and had 3/4 of a length at the line over Right Squall (Country Be Gold). The winner's dam, a half-sister to the Jones-bred MGSW Siphon City (Siphon {Brz}) and to GSP Bronx City Girl (Yankee Gentleman), is represented by the 2-year-old colt Indian Lover (Desert Party), a yearling filly by Airdrie's young sire Creative Cause and produced a full-sister to Chief Istan 28 days ago.
