Named a 'TDN Rising Star' when decimating a field of main-track maidens at Gulfstream by 16 1/4 lengths last October, Shisospicy (Mitole) faded to third after setting hot fractions in the Fern Creek Stakes at Churchill in November. She just failed to last in the Jan. 4 Mockingbird Stakes at Oaklawn, but most recently wired a Gulfstream allowance in her first go on the grass Feb. 5.
Carrying an imposing worktab for this return to stakes competition, the Morplay colorbearer was kicked straight into a clear advantage by Irad Ortiz, Jr., getting her opening couple of furlongs in :21.46 over ground considerably easier than what she encountered in South Florida. Holding Dreamaway (Flameaway) at bay into the lane, Shisospicy carried a daylight advantage into the final furlong and held sway late as Dreamaway plugged on gamely. Abientot (Not This Time), winner of last year's GIII Matron Stakes, ran on determinedly for third.
“She broke fast out of there and she's got speed, so I tried to relax and enjoy the time out there when she was on the lead,” the winning rider commented. “I bided my time, and turning for home she gave me a good turn of foot to the end. They were coming but she held on.”
Shisospicy is the 12th stakes winner for her Spendthrift-based stallion and is the 28th black-type winner produced by a daughter of that nursery's Into Mischief. The winner's dam was a $90,000 purchase by the Heiligbrodts out of the 2017 OBS January Sale and was never out of the money in her seven career appearances. The second of two winners produced by Mischief Galore, Shisospicy has a 2-year-old half-brother by the Heiligbrodts' Yaupon, who was a $75,000 KEENOV weanling turned $175,000 FTKOCT yearling, and her foal of 2024 is a filly by the same stallion.
