Just one week removed from siring his 14th Group 1 winner in Te Akau Racing's Embellish (NZ) who saluted in the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, Waikato Stud's Savabeel earned his 15th top-flight scorer, when Go Racing's Hasahalo (NZ) ran off with the 1600m NZ$300,000 G1 Gavelhouse.com 1000 Guineas at Riccarton Park on Nov. 18.
The Stephen McKee trainee was sent postward at 22-1 and raced solidly in midfield while Malambo (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}) claimed leadership duties, closely shadowed by Pierrocity (Aus) (Pierro {Aus}) and heavy favourite Prom Queen (NZ) (Super Easy {NZ}), a bit rank on the rail. Drifting farther back as the frontrunners hit halfway, Sam Spratt had the diminutive bay in a good position and steered Hasahalo out toward the center of the course as Prom Queen took up the baton in upper stretch. The chestnut's advantage was brief, however, as Hasahalo let down powerfully at the 200-metre mark, eventually storming across the line four lengths clear of GSW Dijon Bleu (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}), who was a half-length to the good of The Lustre (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}). Prom Queen faded to ninth.
“I was really happy with her last run at Ellerslie in a strong Rating 85 race,” McKee, who was winning his first New Zealand 1000 Guineas, told www.nzracing.co.nz. “She got back and never got a clear run and before that she struck a wet track. There was still a question mark about the mile today, but she got the job done well and found the line strongly.”
Added reignswoman Spratt, “She went past them like they were tied to the ground. When I asked her to go, she had fire coming out the back end.”
Runner-up in the G2 Challenge S. at second asking at Trentham last December, Hasahalo saluted in the G3 Eclipse S. over 1200m at Ellerslie on New Year's Day, before taking bridesmaid honours in the Listed Karaka Million behind G1SW Melody Belle (NZ) (Commands {Aus}) at the end of the month. Out of the top three in her next four starts, Hasahalo was 11th in a Benchmark 85 handicap at Ellerslie over 1400 metres on Nov. 7 following a ninth in the G3 Gold Trail S. at Hastings on Sept. 23.
Pedigree Notes…
Bred by Waikato Stud and Mrs. I. O'Shea and offered at the NZB Premier Yearling Sale in 2016, Hasahalo was knocked down for NZ$110,000 to Go Racing and is the third winner out of the placed Encosta de Lago (Aus) mare Halloween (Aus), herself a full-sister to Australian GSP Just Forget It (Aus) and a half-sister to Generous Nature (Aus) (Carnegie {Ire}). The latter is responsible for Savvy Nature (NZ) (Savabeel {NZ}), a group winner in Australian and Hong Kong, who was third in the G1 Chandon Spring Champion S. and GSW Addictive Nature (Aus) (Savabeel {Aus}). Second dam La Lagune (Aus) (Danehill) was a MSW in Australia, and ran second in the 2001 G1 Blue Diamond S. The only black-type winner to date out of her dam, Hasahalo is followed by a juvenile full-brother named Hasabro (NZ) and a yearling filly by Sacred Falls (NZ).
