Let go at 9-1 in this switch to the sod, Con Te Partiro saved ground in sixth as Big City Dreamin (Iqbaal) blazed along through swift early splits of :22 flat and :45.11. Expertly handled by Hall of Famer John Velazquez to avoid trouble as favored Lull (War Front) clipped heels and fell on the far turn, the “TDN Rising Star” unleashed a powerful rally down the center of the lane to blow past her rivals and win for fun. Double-digit longshot Jazz Lady got up for second and pacesetter Big City Dreamin, who was bred by winning trainer Wesley Ward, faded to fifth. Both Lull and jockey Manny Franco walked off the course of their own accord and Franco was cleared to ride in the finale.
“I didn't have enough speed to be there [with the early leaders], so I sat there thinking 'make one run with her,'” said Velazquez. “[When] the horse fell in front of me, I just kind of went back to the inside then came out at the eighth pole.”
One of Ward's trademark early spring 2-year-old winners, Con Te Partiro was tabbed a Rising Star off an ultra-impressive 5 1/2-length debut graduation on the dirt at Keeneland Apr. 13. She was outkicked late to finish fourth behind stablemate Silvertoni (Tapit) in the Kentucky Juvenile S. on the Churchill Downs main track May 5, a race that was further flattered when third-place finisher Thirstforlife (Stay Thirsty) came back to romp by 6 1/2 lengths and earn “TDN Rising Star” status at Churchill before finishing third in Del Mar's GIII Best Pal S. last Saturday.
The winner is a half to fellow “TDN Rising Star” Donworth, who was picked up by Reddam Racing for $550,000 at last term's Keeneland November sale as part of the Regis Farm dispersal. He romped by 11 lengths in last term's Stanton S. and was last seen finishing third in the GII Charles Town Classic S. Apr. 23. Their GISP Temple Street is also responsible for a yearling colt named Tiz Bob (Tiznow) and produced a yearling filly by Tiznow. She was bred back to that sire.
