This may not have been the most competitive renewal of this Prix du Jockey Club trial to be staged, but Cloth of Stars duly did what was asked of him and put himself in the running for the June 5 Chantilly Classic. Off the mark over a mile at Deauville in August before following up at that trip in the G3 Prix des Chenes at Longchamp in September, the bay was third to Robin of Navan (Fr) (American Post {GB}) in the G3 Prix de Conde over nine furlongs at Chantilly in October and second behind that rival in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud over this trip the following month. Fresh early restrained last of the quartet headed by the enterprisingly-ridden Viserano, he was asked to move up through the gears turning for home and had reeled in the lone leader passing the furlong pole en route to a comfortable success. Mickael Barzalona, who exercised extreme cool despite the length of rope given to Viserano to provide Andre Fabre with the outright record of seven wins in this contest, is hoping for bigger and better things in the near future. “He has a tendency to be keen, so I was happy with the way the race went after the first turn. They went a really good pace and he settled nicely and quickened to get it done,” he said. “I hope he'll learn more from that and there is good room for improvement.” Click for the Racing Post result or the free Equineline.com catalogue-style pedigree.
