Global Glamour, the filly bought by a syndicate of around 40 women for just A$65,000, took her bankroll past the A$600,000 mark when winning her second Group 1 within a week in Saturday's Thousand Guineas. A six-length debut maiden winner at Kembla Grange in January, Global Glamour missed the remainder of the autumn due to injury but quickly got back on course this term. Third first-up behind Thousand Guineas favourite Foxplay (Aus) (Foxwedge {Aus}) in the G2 Fast & Furious S. Sept. 3, Global Glamour was beaten just 3/4 of a length when sixth behind that same rival in the G2 Tea Rose S. two weeks later, and bested Saturday's G1 Spring Champion S. winner Yankee Rose (Aus) (All American {Aus}) in last weekend's G1 Flight S. at Randwick. Racing in Victoria for the first time on Saturday, Global Glamour bounded out to the lead from the break and sprinted along about a length-and-a-half to the better around the turn as La Luna Rossa (NZ) (Written Tycoon {Aus}) tracked her in second. Still in front while racing off the fence swinging into the straight, Global Glamour had to dig deep to see off the placed runners on the fence and showed plenty of heart to provide co-trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott with a first Thousand Guineas win.
“She's done a great job,” said winning rider Kerrin McEvoy. “Gai and Adrian have had to back her up within the week. She was pretty dominant in the Flight and to his credit [the winning rider on that occasion] Timmy Clark filled me in and gave me a few pointers to keep her sweet because she can be a tricky ride. We were able to get out and into a great rhythm. She was so tough–she's a good type, well put together and she's light on her feet. I knew we were going to be hard to catch going past the three [furlong] pole and she proved that.”
“She's an absolute star,” Bott added. “We saw her put it all together last start and she's taken it to another level today.”
Waterhouse outlined some of the options for the bay going forward, saying, “There are a couple of options, maybe the [G1] Coolmore Classic, the mile race for fillies and mares and she's a Magic Millions horse, and all of the ladies from around the world can catch up again there perhaps.” Click here for a TDN feature on Global Glamour's ownership group.
