Shakespeare Retired

GISW Shakespeare (Theatrical {Ire}–Lady Shirl, by Thatís A Nice), has been retired due to a tendon injury in his left foreleg, the Daily Racing Form reports. The winner of the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic and GII Belmont BC H. in 2005, the six-year-old missed the entire 2006 season after suffering a tear in the tendon, but returned after a 21-month absence to win an optional claimer at Saratoga Aug. 2. He followed up with a victory in the Sept. 16 GI Woodbine Mile S., and was being pointed for the Oct. 27 GI Breedersí Cup Mile. ìHe's sound, he was training,î trainer Kiaran McLaughlin told DRF. ìIt went wrong the last day or two and it doesn't look good. After consulting with the vet, we decided we were not going to push on. He's a star; it's unfortunate. I think he'll be an outstanding stallion.î
