Eight-year-old Shakis (Ire) (Machiavellian–Tawaaded {Ire}, by Nashwan), who was slated to make his final career start in the GI Citation H. at Hollywood Park Nov. 29, suffered a fractured hind leg during a workout at Hollywood Friday morning and had to be euthanized. The Shadwell homebred, trained Kiaran McLaughlin, was scheduled to start his stud career next year. The winner of back-to-back editions of the GII Bernard Baruch H. in 2007 and 2008, Shakis compiled a record of 35-7-5-5 and earnings of $860,362.
