Six Aussie Raiders For Appleby

Charlie Appleby | Racing Post

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby will have his first Australian runners during the spring carnival, and the Newmarket-based conditioner will look to make a big impact with six shippers, according to Racing.com.

Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) was on Wednesday assigned a weight of 54.5kg (120 pounds) for the G1 Caulfield Cup Oct. 15, and Appleby told the site, “I am happy with that weight. He is an adaptable horse with a high cruising speed, who I think will be ideal for Caulfield.”

Scottish is one of five nominated by Appleby to the Nov. 1 G1 Melbourne Cup, and the trainer said, “All of the five in my stable have completed their preparations over here [in Newmarket] and they are ready to go into quarantine on Sept. 15.”

The Appleby-trained Tryster (Ire) (Shamardal), one of the stars of this year's Dubai World Cup Carnival when winning the G1 Jebel Hatta S., will target the G1 Cox Plate Oct. 22. Godolphin Chief Executive and Racing Manager John Ferguson told Racing.com, “His Highness Sheikh Mohammed would love to win the Melbourne Cup–he has gone close to winning several times. But, he is also interested in targeting other races during the Melbourne Spring Carnival and we believe we have a team of suitable horses for those races.”

Fellow Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor has also nominated five horses to the Melbourne Cup, but he will prep them in Britain before determining whether to send them.
