Smart Call (SAf) secured the first berth on offer in 2016 for the Breeders' Cup, gaining entry to the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita in November with a two-length victory in the G1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock S. over last year's victress Inara (SAf). Away smartly, Smart Call settled just behind the leading bunch, while saving ground through the early going. Unleashed up the inside with a quarter-mile remaining, the 3-1 shot seized command and outfooted Inara to the wire. Bela-Bela (SAf) made up some late ground to take third.
Previously a winner of the G1 Woolavington 2000 at Greyville in May of last year, the Mauritzfontein Stud homebred ran second to Saturday's favorite Same Jurisdiction (SAf) (Mambo In Seattle) in the G1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province S. that July, but could do no better than fifth in the Pinnacle S. coming off a four-month layoff at Turffontein Nov. 3. Smart Call came on from that run with a tally in the G2 Ipi Tombe Challenge at that venue Nov. 28 and added a fitness-building 1800-meter conditions plate over that strip Dec. 12.
Smart Call was sired by Juddmonte homebred Ideal World (Kingmambo), a son of French champion sophomore filly and U.S. champion grass mare Banks Hill (GB) (Danehill), who scored twice at the listed level in France and also ran second in the G2 Qatar Prix Niel. By far the best foal produced by her parents, Smart Call's dam was unraced, but her second dam, the winning Great Verdict (Aus) (Christmas Tree {Aus}) is a half to a slew of Australian stakes winners, including Australian highweight and MG1SW Zeditave (Aus) (The Judge), GSW winner and G1 Lightning S. runner-up Alannon (Aus) (Noalcoholic {Fr}), GSWs Pampas Fire (Aus) (Prince True) and Zedagal (Aus) (The Judge {Aus}) and SW Square Deal (Aus) (The Judge {Aus}).
