The quarantine placed on trainers Bryan Smart and Michael Herrington due to their association to the yard of Kevin Ryan, which had an Equine Herpesvirus-1 positive, has been lifted. Ryan's yard remains quarantined and the subject of “ongoing testing and surveillance,” according to David Sykes, director of Equine Health and Welfare for the BHA.
Smart and Herrington's yards were placed under quarantine because runners under their care had shared a horsebox with runners from Ryan's yard before the virus presented itself, but tests from the Smart and Herrington yards came back clean.
“Following repeat testing and site visits to all affected yards involved in the EHV-1 case, the British Horseracing Authority and Animal Health Trust have agreed that the precautionary quarantine placed on the yards of trainers Bryan Smart and Michael Herrington can be lifted, and the yards are free to declare runners again,” said Sykes. “The quarantine restrictions on the yard of Kevin Ryan–the site of the initial case–remain in place, with ongoing testing and surveillance in operation.”
