The G1 Galaxy H. saw a breakthrough win for In Her Time (Aus) (Time Thief {Aus}), who atoned for a previous narrow defeat at the top level to register her first Group 1 success. Patiently ridden by Zac Purton in the 1100m event, the Ben Smith-trained filly was settled in mid division as Ball Of Muscle (Aus) (Dubawi {Ire}) took them along. This leader was tracked by Jungle Edge (Aus) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Snitty Kitty (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) as they turned for home with Purton still biding his time in fifth on the 3-1 punters' choice. 300 metres out Purton started to get busy and as soon as In Her Time drew level at the 200 metre marker she began to put daylight between herself and her rivals. English (Aus) (Encosta De Lago {Aus}) staged a late rally but In Her Time had the race won at that stage, hitting the line three parts of a length ahead of the Waterhouse/Bott-trained filly with Viridine (Aus) (Poet's Voice {GB}) sticking to his guns the same distance back in third.
“We've been waiting a while, probably 12 months we've been waiting to win one,” trainer Ben Smith told Racing.com after the race. “Zac rode her a treat today, probably a bit further back than she normally is so for her to knuckle down and come after them like that and finish off the way she has it was very pleasing. I was starting to panic a little bit, but it was great to see she got the job done.” Having played the bridesmaid in a few top level races Smith said he reckons In Her Time is now the finished article. “She's a lot bigger and stronger this time in. Her feet problems that have niggled her for probably 12 months, she's over that now.”
Hong Kong-based Purton was gracious in victory and said,
“She's deserved to win a Group 1 and now she's finally got it, so I'm very happy for Ben and connections. She began really well so I was able to come across and just slot in nicely behind the speed. She got there pretty easy and just wandered a bit late, it was a good effort.”
In Her Time surprised many when making a winning debut at odds of 70-1 at Canterbury in September 2015 but a couple of bouts of cardiac arrhythmia halted her progress until that problem was rectified. She resumed winning ways on the last day of 2016 when scoring at Canterbury before enjoying a good spell in early 2017, winning the G2 China Horse Club Breeders Classic at Randwick and the G2 Ranvet Millie Fox S. at Rosehill. She came up short on her next starts at the highest level before high-class placed efforts in the G1 Ubet Stradbroke and the G1 Tattersall's Tiara both at Doomben in June of last year. She maintained a high level of form notching up two more stakes wins before being narrowly denied by Hey Doc (Aus) (Duporth {Aus}) in the G1 Ladbrokes Manikato S. at Moonee Valley last October and was produced in fine shape by her trainer to take Saturday's test.
