Speedy Mythical A Fantastic Beast In Adirondack At Saratoga

Mythical | Sarah Andrew

In another scintillating display at America's summer playground, Mythical (St Patrick's Day–Lailoni, by Brethren) put her perfect two-for-two record to the test in the GIII Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga and passed with flying colors.

She began her career in her home state Apr. 17 at Gulfstream Park, and dominated the baby dash right out of the gate, winning by 8 1/2 lengths. After successfully taking on the boys in the Tremont Stakes last out June 5 at this venue, the Florida-bred was ready to do battle against a well-regarded field of fillies here and the betting public responded accordingly by making her the 4-5 favorite all the same.

Much like the first and second verse, the third was a photo copy effort: Mythical rolled out of the gate once again and controlled the pace up the backstretch after :21.99 and :44.86 early splits. Despite their best efforts, the field could not cut into her margin through the turn–though Mythical did briefly brush with the rail midway on it–and they had over five lengths to make up at the head of affairs. Striding home strongly, but a touch green in some stages as she turned her head to the grandstand, it was 3 1/4 lengths back to Meringue (Frosted) in second. Spa Prospector (Authentic) was a well-beaten third.

The final running time was 1:17.20, almost a full second faster than 'TDN Rising Star' Ewing (Knicks Go) ran when winning Saturday's GII Saratoga Special Stakes in 1:18.03.

“She's looking at everything [in the mornings] and saying 'hey, what's up with you.' Every horse,” said winning trainer Jorge Delgado. “She wants to go eat grass and say, 'hi' to people. She wants to stand and look.”

“She does the same in the race, but Emisael [Jaramillo] is a really good jockey. He makes sure she knows where the wire is and keeps on going. She's curious, I would say, and that's the way she shows it.”

Delgado added, “She's an unexpected blessing for me this year…Brian [Cohen, of winning owner Arindel] called me one day and said, 'I'm going to send you a filly that I think will fit your program really well.' It turned out to be her.”

When asked about a potential start in the GI Spinaway Stakes Aug. 30, which carries a 'Win and You're In” berth to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in November, Delgado said, “Most likely, 99 percent. God willing, knocking on wood, everything goes good after this race and she comes back sound.”

“I saw 44 and four [for the half-mile] and I just though, 'eh, maybe a little quick,' but…I don't know,” said Brian Cohen. “Honestly, I just blacked out a little bit and [when] she went 44 and four, let me know when it's over [laughs], which didn't seem to come very soon. But it was great.”

Pedigree Notes:

Mythical is the first to the races for Lailoni, herself a daughter of GSW Dat You Miz Blue (Cure the Blues), and thus making her a half-sister to multiple stakes producer Mystic Blue (Maimonides). Said aforementioned dam claims MSW & GSP Blue Fire (Aurelius Maximus) as well as MSP Genghis (Brethren) and his full-brother SP Merlin. Lailoni has a yearling colt named Boston Bird (Noble Bird) and a 2025 filly by Colonelsdarktemper in the wings.
