Speightstown Filly Remains Perfect in Japan

Rieno Tesoro (Speightstown), a $250,000 graduate of the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale, opened her account at first asking over 1200 metres of the Sapporo turf Aug. 27 before making it two straight over that course and trip just eight days later.

Transitioning to the dirt for the first time, the chestnut showed good speed from gate 14 and attended the pace, but was trapped out four and five wide for the opening four furlongs. Sticking to her task despite the wide passage, she hit the front going extremely well at the 200m marker and came away to a facile success.

The winner's dam was a two-time stakes winner in state-bred restricted company for this breeder and New York-based trainer Christophe Clement. Akilina's son Governor Malibu is a black-type winner and was runner-up in the GII Peter Pan S. and GII Jim Dandy S. this season. Akilina is the dam of a yearling filly by Ghostzapper, a weanling colt by Super Saver and was most recently bred to Uncle Mo. VIDEO
