Tipperary-based trainer Tommy Stack will retire at the end of this season, handing his license over to his assistant and son Fozzy Stack, according to Racing Post. The 71-year-old Stack began training in 1986 upon conclusion of a successful career as a jumps jockey, highlighted by a victory aboard Red Rum in his third Grand National win in 1977. His first big-race winner was 1988 Cartier Million winner Corwyn Bay (GB) (Caerleon), and his first Classic winner came in 1994 when he saddled Las Meninas (Ire) (Glenstal) to win the G1 1000 Guineas. His first Group 1 win in Ireland came three years later courtesy of Tarascon (Ire) (Tirol {GB}) in the G1 Moyglare Stud S., and she went on to hand the trainer another Classic in the following year's G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Another highlight was the win by Myboycharlie (Ire) (Danetime {Ire}) in the G1 Prix Morny in 2007.
Stack also sent out a pair of Grade I winners in the U.S.–Kostroma (Ire) (Caerleon) in the 1992 Beverly D. S. and Alexander Tango (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in the 2007 Garden City S.
“After some deliberation I have decided to retire at the end of the year when Fozzy, who has been an absolutely essential and integral part of everything here for the best part of 20 years, will take over the licence,” Stack told Racing Post. “We have had some memorable days all the way from Corwyn Bay to Myboycharlie and I must thank each and every one of our owners for their commitment and support during that time. I have absolutely no doubt that many great days lie ahead for Fozzy here at Thomastown Castle.”
