Whispering Oaks Farms' Tip Tap Tapizar, forced to wait for racing room turning into the straight, was angled to the outside at the top of the lane and closed powerfully to overtake Holiday Bonus (Harlan's Holiday) in deep stretch and become the first stakes winner for freshman sire Tapizar (by Tapit) at Monmouth Park Sunday. The 8-5 favorite pressed the pace while between foes in tight quarters on the first turn. He continued to sit just off the leaders and was forced to steady slightly off heels down the backstretch. With nowhere to go turning for home, he was taken back, tipped out four wide at the top of the stretch and ran down Holiday Bonus to win going away.
“I know my horse has plenty of speed,” said winning jockey Paco Lopez. “I took a hold of him early and let others go out to the front. I ran into some traffic trouble down the backside, but nothing serious. When we turned for home I angled him out and he just took off.”
A front-running first-out winner at Churchill Downs June 11, Tip Tap Tapizar was third in the July 2 GIII Bashford Manor S. in Louisville. He lost any chance when knocked by Recruiting Ready (Algorithms) on the turn in the Aug. 14 GII Saratoga Special, finishing third behind that foe before being promoted to second due to the interference. Tip Tap Tapizar is out of Counterpoise, a half-sister to Canadian champion Peaks and Valleys (Mt. Livermore) and to MGSP Alternate (Seattle Slew), the dam of MGSW Alternation (Distorted Humor). The mare sold, with this foal in utero, for $62,000 at the 2013 Keeneland November sale. She produced a colt by Graydar this year and was bred back to Half Ours.
