There have been few better overseas raiders in the G1 Henkel-Preis der Diana than Wuheida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the inclusion of last year's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner has significantly enhanced the 159th renewal at Dusseldorf on Sunday. Taken out of Thursday's G1 Nassau S. at a rain-hit Goodwood, Godolphin's daughter of the G1 Fillies Mile and GI Yellow Ribbon S. heroine Hibaayeb (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) belongs in the calibre of the 2011 winner Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and Secret Gesture (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) who was second in 2013. Her comeback effort when 1 1/4-lengths second to the subsequent G1 Prix Rothschild winner Roly Poly (War Front) in the G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket July 14 suggested she could enjoy a profitable campaign at the highest level and trainer Charlie Appleby is keenly anticipating this bid.
“We were delighted with Wuheida on her seasonal reappearance and she came out of the Falmouth S. well,” he explained. “It was always the plan to step her up in trip afterwards and ground conditions meant that we had to give the Nassau S. a miss. She is clear on official ratings and goes into the race in good order.”
Local betting suggests that Germany's chief hopes are Gestut Haus Zoppenbroich's July 1 G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis winner Lacazar (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Stall Ullmann's G2 Diana-Trial scorer Tusked Wings (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}). The latter beat Gestut Rottgen's 2016 G3 Preis der Winterkonigin winner Well Spoken (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) in that 10-furlong Hoppegarten prep June 4 and the latter was subsequently fifth when possibly overdoing it in front in the Hamburger Stutenpreis. Lacazar's trainer Peter Schiergen also saddles Eckhard Sauren's progressive Ashiana (Ger) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), who took the nine-furlong Listed Kronimus Diana-Trial at Baden-Baden May 27 and Hanover's Listed Grosser Jubilaimspreis der Wohnungswirtschjaft over a mile and a quarter July 9.
