Let's Make the Maximum of What We Have

How innocent we all were, in hindsight. Maybe you, like me, were in town from colder climes; feeling your whole soul opening, flower-like, to the unaccustomed warmth of the Miami springtime. From the upper arcade I gazed superciliously at Maximum Security (New Year's Day) as he strolled round the parade ring. The hometown upstart had won three sprints by an aggregate 35 lengths, but you could have claimed him for $16,000 on his debut. Yes, everyone cautioned that Jason Servis, at a 45% clip through the meet, could do unexpected...

That Wednesday, Mar. 11, was the last day of normal operations before we began a record...

Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Cancelled Due to COVID-19

Fasig-Tipton and The Stronach Group announced Friday that the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training, scheduled for Apr. 1, would be cancelled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gulfstream Park had already announced late Thursday that racing would be conducted without spectators, indefinitely. "While disappointing, canceling the Gulfstream Sale is the most prudent and responsible decision we can make in light of the rapidly changing circumstances associated with COVID-19," said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. "With the facility closures at Gulfstream, it prevents us from conducting the auction. The...

Uncle Mo's Donna Veloce Ultra Impressive in Santa Ysabel

Super talented 'TDN Rising Star' Donna Veloce (Uncle Mo) kicked off her potential trip to the GI Kentucky Oaks with a truly dominant romp in the GIII Santa Ysabel S. at Santa Anita Sunday. The 1-5 favorite, freshened since a runner-up effort in the GI Starlet S. last December, was away awkwardly and forced to bide her time toward the back of the field early. She eventually settled into a more comfortable rhythm while saving ground and creeping up down the backside, and appeared absolutely loaded while traveling in third...

TDN Kentucky Oaks Top 10 For March 5

Since we were last heard from, Bast (Uncle Mo) has been retired due to a soft tissue injury and Tonalist's Shape (Tonalist) did it again, staying undefeated with a win in the GII Davona Dale S. at Gulfstream. Also in Florida, Eve of War (Declaration of War) couldn't get the job done in an allowance after winning her debut for the Todd Pletcher Stable by 7 1/2 lengths. A fourth-place finish likely knocked her off the road to the GI Kentucky Oaks. This coming weekend, the top 3-year-old fillies will...

Ete Indien Runs Them Off Their Feet in Fountain of Youth

Ete Indien got over and to the lead from his wide draw, and never looked back as he streaked home a dominant winner of Saturday's GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. despite drifting out. Heavy favorite Dennis' Moment (Tiznow) backed up early and trailed the field home. Gunned from his outside post and over to the rail with a short run into the first turn, Ete Indien maintained a clear advantage down the backside and appeared to be traveling comfortably as he posted splits :23.14, :46.72 and 1:11.30. He was...

Romans as Confident as Ever in Dennis' Moment

It's been nearly four months since Dennis' Moment (Tiznow) was last seen finishing last in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, the result of a bad stumble at the start. That's not the way anyone wants to go into their 3-year-old season, but nothing that he has seen from Dennis' Moment has lessened the enthusiasm trainer Dale Romans has for his horse. "At this stage going into the Derby, I think he's probably the best prospect I've ever had," Romans said. "I've had a lot of good ones and I've had...
