Champion Untapable (Tapit) seeks her second-straight GI Apple Blossom H. title at Oaklawn Friday as she attempts to bounce back from another lackluster seasonal debut. The Winchell homebred capped her 2014 campaign with a GI Breeders' Cup Distaff victory that sealed up champion 3-year-old filly honors, but reemerged in Hot springs last March to finish second at 10 cents on the dollar in the GII Azeri S. She stepped forward to annex last year's Apple Blossom, but would go winless for the rest of the season, finishing second in the GI Ogden Phipps S. in June; runner-up to eventual BC Distaff heroine Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat) in the GIII Shuvee H. in August; third in a strong renewal of the GI Personal Ensign S. later that month behind MGISW Sheer Drama (Burning Roma); and second by a neck in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. Oct. 4. Ruled out of a Distaff title defense after spiking a fever, she reemerged in the GII Azeri S. here Mar. 19, but came up a head short of Call Pat (Lawyer Ron) as the 2-5 chalk. Streamline (Straight Line) and Theogony (Curlin) weren't far back in third and fourth, respectively.
'TDN Rising Star' Tara's Tango (Unbridled's Song) invades from California for breeder Stonestreet Stables and Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer. The grey finally broke through at the graded level after a couple of close calls in the GII Santa Maria S. Feb. 13, and defeated fellow 'Rising Star' Taris (Flatter) in the GI Santa Margarita S. back in Arcadia Mar. 19.
The regally bred Forever Unbridled (Unbridled's Song–Lemons Forever) appears to have turned a major corner in her last two starts. The Chuck Fipke homebred bested recent GIII Top Flight H. heroine Carrumba (Bernardini) in Aqueduct's GIII Comely S. Nov. 28, and overcame a slow pace to prove clearly best in the GIII Houston Ladies Classic S. Jan. 30.
