Sparingly campaigned over her first two years at the races, Tammy the Torpedo (More Than Ready) got her 4-year-old season off to a promising beginning in the Suwannee River under a crafty front-running ride from Joel Rosario.
Following a debut victory at Saratoga for which she was accorded 'TDN Rising Star' status, Tammy the Torpedo was third to stablemate Lady Eli (Divine Park) in the 2014 GIII Miss Grillo S. and seventh to that one in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf in October 2014. Off the track for some 352 days, she returned to annex a first-level allowance over the Belmont turf Oct. 18, then was a troubled sixth back in against graded-stakes company in Churchill's GII Mrs. Revere S. Nov. 14. Tammy the Torpedo was forced to deal with a double-digit draw in this track's Tropical Park Oaks Dec. 19, but overcame a four-wide run on the second turn to outgun Celestine (Scat Daddy) by a neck.
Drawn on the rail for this seasonal unveiling, Tammy the Torpedo was off alertly and was with the early vanguard, but with none of his fellow jockeys showing any particular initiative, Rosario hit the gas passing under the line and backed down the pace through fractions of :23.93 and a moderate :48.58 while tracked by Uchenna (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and the well-backed A Little Bit Sassy (More Than Ready) out three wide. Ridden to quicken a bit entering the second turn, Tammy the Torpedo did not immediately pick up, but had those behind her hard at it, while former G1 New Zealand Derby winner Habibi (NZ) (Ekraar) was beginning to catch the eye five or six wide at the entrance to the home straight. Rainha Da Bateria (Broken Vow) threaded her way through between rivals and Habibi was staying on well down the center, but Tammy the Torpedo was always holding that pair in the run to the wire.
“There wasn't a lot of speed in the race and [trainer] Chad [Brown] was telling me that we might find ourselves on the lead, or if somebody goes, to follow,” Rosario explained. “It worked out good. It took a little time to get out of the gate, but she responded after that and took me all the way to the lead. After that she just kept on going.”
Bred on the More Than Ready–Danzig cross so successful in other parts of the world, Tammy the Torpedo is out of a half-sister to the accomplished turf horses Criminologist (Maria's Mon), Rescue Squad (Dynaformer) and Party Now (Tiznow). Further down the page is GISW Carriage Trail (Giant's Causeway). The winner's dam has a yearling colt of 2016 by Lookin at Lucky and is currently pregnant to More Than Ready's multiple Grade I-winning son Verrazano.
