+GOLDEN HAWK (c, 2, Tapit–Gone Purrfect, by Gone West) graduated in frontrunning fashion debuting on the Woodbine turf course with a little bit of luck as the race favorite encountered major traffic trouble. Breaking sharply at 5-2, the chestnut went to the lead under his own power and showed the way through a modest :23.53 quarter-mile. Pressed harder by longshot Spring Edition (Sprint At Last) on the far bend, he arrived under pressure at the top of the lane as Woodbridge (Langfuhr), who had been saving ground in third, appeared ready to pounce. Spring Edition, however, came in while tiring and sawed that one off, allowing Golden Hawk to go clear again in midstretch. Woodbridge angled off the rail very late and tried one last time to reel in the leader, but Golden Hawk dug in to hold by a head. The winner's unraced dam is a full-sister to Champion sprinter, MGISW and successful sire Speightstown. His second dam, Silken Cat (Storm Cat) was Champion 2-year-old filly in Canada. Gone Purrfect is responsible for a yearling colt by Medaglia d'Oro and foaled a Super Saver colt this term before being bred back to Pioneerof the Nile. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $25,822.
