+ZARTERA (c, 2, Tapizar–Catera {MSP, $100,420}, by Gone West) hinted at some ability with a four-furlong gate breeze June 12 over the 'good' local strip in :48 1/5, but was nevertheless dismissed at 8-1 in this debut effort. Breaking well, the handsome chestnut was leaned on a bit at the start, but went straight to the front and opened a clear lead. Drifting out a bit at the head of the turn, he allowed Warrior's Club (Warrior's Reward) to advance to his inside, but it mattered little, as Zartera easily shook away from that one soon after straightening for home and held firmly in the last furlong to score a 2 1/2-length win in sharp time over fellow firster Conquest Reformo (Into Mischief). The winner's dam is a multiple stakes placed half-sister to GISW and sire Cuvee (Carson City), as well as GSW Will He Shine (Silver Deputy). This is also the female family of GISW Olympio (Naskra) and GSW/GISP Call Now (Wild Again) and the extended family of Pyro (Pulpit), Untapable (Tapit), Paddy O'Prado (El Prado {Ire}), Wild Wonder (Wild Again) and Early Flyer (Gilded Time). Catera produced Areolite (Tapit), who ran third in this track's Debutante S. as a 2-year-old last year, and foaled a full-brother to the winner this season. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $27,900.
