Tavago Likely To Spell

Tavago | Sharon Chapman

Last season's G1 Australian Derby winner Tavago (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) is likely to head for a spell after a pair of disappointing efforts to kick off his 4-year-old campaign, co-trainer Trent Busuttin told Racing.com. Eleventh of 14 first-up in the G2 Dato' Tan Chin Nam S. at Moonee Valley Sept. 3, the gelding finished last of 10, beaten 18 lengths, in Saturday's G1 Underwood S.

“He ran terrible, awful,” Busuttin told Racing.com. “He was scoped after the race and nothing appeared to be wrong. You can't say he hasn't come up this prep because that run is beyond that.”

“We'll continue to monitor his progress and see how he is over the next few days at home but the chances of him going to the paddock are very high–it's hard to go to a [G1] Caulfield Cup on that.”
