Term's Start

Midterm | Racing Post

This time last year, Midterm (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) was heading the ante-post betting for the Epsom Derby, but things went wayward after his G3 Sandown Classic Trial win and the slate is wiped clean for his return in Saturday's G3 John Porter S. Signing off an injury-interrupted campaign with a seventh in the G1 Champion S. at Ascot in October, Khalid Abdullah's son of Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) bids to extend trainer Sir Michael Stoute's record of seven winners in a race he has used for the reintroduction of subsequent G2 Hardwicke S. winners Rock Hopper (GB), Maraahel (Ire), Harbinger (GB) and Dartmouth (GB). “He wintered well and has enjoyed a straightforward preparation for this,” racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said. “We think a mile-and-a-half looks to be his best trip, although he was far from disgraced behind Almanzor in the Champion S. after an interrupted season. He fits a good Sir Michael Stoute profile going forward. Newbury looks a nice starting point and hopefully he has a clear run this year.”

St Albans Bloodstock's Dal Harraild (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) is one of the most interesting improvers in the field, having come through some tough handicaps to win the Listed Godolphin S. with authority over this trip at Newmarket in September. Trainer William Haggas said he is keen to see how he measures up. “He'll need the run, however he is in good form at home. It looks a hot race, but he will love the ground there and that is why I am running him. He has to have quick ground.”

Qatar Racing Limited's Chemical Charge (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) made the switch from Ger Lyons to Ralph Beckett over the winter and re-emerged with a decisive success in a Doncaster conditions event in which the re-opposing Muntahaa (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) was third attempting to give him six pounds on Apr. 2. “He's come out of his Doncaster win in good form and we're looking forward to running him,” Beckett said. “It was a good start for the year. We think he can be competitive on Saturday.” Ibrahim Araci's Crimean Tatar (Tur) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) defends an unbeaten record and beat Chemical Charge in the Listed Wild Flower S. on Kempton's Polytrack in November. Rob Speers, the owner's racing manager, said, “It's well known that he had a setback at two which prevented him from running, but since then he's done nothing other than improve. Physically, he now looks the best he has ever done and we're looking forward to an exciting season ahead. Obviously, he's only had two races in his life and is still learning. He'll be up against much more battle-hardened group performers, but this is the next step. He's only got a few miles on the clock and we're hoping he can make up for lost time.”
