Continuing our look at the stallions with first foals at the sales over the coming weeks. The stud fee listed was the price on retirement in 2015.
HEERAAT (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire})
Mickley Stud – £4,000
A speed-orientated cross of Dark Angel on a Green Desert mare is likely to appeal to pinhookers, as well as the fact that the former Shadwell trainee Heeraat hails from the immediate family of Group 1-winning sprinter Malhub. A first book just shy of 100 mares should ensure that this five-time winner over five and six furlongs, including Newbury's G3 Hackwood S., makes his presence felt when his first juveniles take to the track. Heeraat provided the top lot at the recent one-day Flat Breeding Stock Sale at Tattersalls Ireland, where his colt out of treble winner Lexington Rose (GB) (Captain Gerrard {GB}) sold for €25,000.
Number catalogued: Goffs 10, Tattersalls 13
KINGMAN (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire})
Banstead Manor Stud – £55,000
The Juddmonte stallion barn is never devoid of top-class talent and Frankel's arrival in 2013 was followed two years later by the Timeform 134-rated Kingman, whose only 'blot' on an otherwise spotless career came with his half-length defeat by Night Of Thunder (Ire) in the G1 QIPCO 2,000 Guineas. This was swiftly atoned for with a five-length demolition job in the Irish equivalent three weeks later and he was subsequently chased home by Night Of Thunder, then Toronado (Ire) and Anodin (Fr) when annexing the G1 St James's Palace S., G1 Sussex S., and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois. A classy individual out of the Classic-winning racemare Zenda (GB) (Zamindar), he has unsurprisingly been backed by many leading breeders and covered 138 mares.
Number catalogued: Goffs 1, Tattersalls 8
KUROSHIO (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus})
Overbury Stud – £3,500
Group 2-winning sprinter Kuroshio stood at Overbury Stud in 2015 but did not return from his southern hemisphere base this season. A full-brother to another speedy Group winner in Australia, his dam Arctic Drift (Gone West) is a daughter of GI Alabama S. winner November Snow (Storm Cat). Kuroshio made his mark early as a juvenile when winning the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude S. (5.5f) in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed. He covered 31 mares in England.
Number catalogued: Tattersalls 3
MOOHAAJIM (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire})
Rathbarry Stud – €5,000
Winner of the G2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef S. before suffering a quarter-length defeat by Reckless Abandon in the G1 Middle Park S. at two, Moohaajim returned to take third in the G3 Greenham S. at three but wasn't seen again after sustaining an injury in the G1 2,000 Guineas of 2013. A neat and good-looking individual, he covered 52 mares at Rathbarry Stud and looks sure to sire some early types.
Number catalogued: Goffs 13, Tattersalls 1
MORPHEUS (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB})
Tally-Ho Stud – €6,000
He may have no black type but Morpheus was a treble-winning 90-rated miler and, more pertinently, owns a first-rate pedigree, being a half-brother to Frankel (GB) and his fellow Group 1 winner Noble Mission (GB). That fact which was enough to persuade the owners of 129 mares to support him in his first season at a competitive fee.
Number catalogued: Goffs 37
MUKHADRAM (GB) (Shamardal)
Nunnery Stud – £7,000
By one of the best stallions in Europe and a Group 1 winner to boot, Mukhadram's introductory fee of £7,000 was remarkable. He was unraced at two but won his first two starts as a spring 3-year-old over a mile at Newmarket. His three subsequent victories were all recorded in Group company over ten furlongs, the highlight being the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. at five. A foal purchase himself by Shadwell at 190,000gns, he is well represented by a decent number of the offspring of the 117 mares he covered in 2015.
Number catalogued: Goffs 10, Tattersalls 29
NO NAY NEVER (Scat Daddy)
Coolmore Stud – €20,000
Hopes will be high in camp Coolmore that No Nay Never can replicate the success of his late sire and he certainly had the credentials on the track. A crack juvenile for Wesley Ward, the imposing colt took both the G2 Norfolk S. and the G1 Darley Prix Morny. He enhanced this record at three with a win in the GIII Woodford at Keeneland before finishing runner-up to new Lanwades recruit Bobby's Kitten in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. With 118 mares in his first book, he has every chance to make a success of his new career.
Number catalogued: Goffs 9, Tattersalls 5, Arqana 1
OLYMPIC GLORY (IRE) (Choisir {Aus})
Haras du Bouquetot – €15,000
Well named by his original owner Julie Wood to start his successful racing career in the year of the London Olympics, he lived up to his moniker by winning four of his five juvenile starts, including a pair of Group 2s and culminating in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. By this stage Olympic Glory had already been sold to Sheikh Joaan Al Thani's Al Shaqab operation and with a further three Group 1 victories to come at three and four––in the Queen Elizabeth II S., the Lockinge S. and the Prix de la Foret––Olympic Glory was a shrewd investment for a team with a fledgling stallion operation. His sire Choisir is much missed in Europe and the high number of breeders who supported him will be hoping that Olympic Glory can follow his fine example.
Number catalogued: Goffs 6, Tattersalls 7, Arqana 8
RULER OF THE WORLD (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
Coolmore Stud – €15,000
It is largely thanks to Coolmore that so many recent winners of the Derby have remained at stud in Europe and Ruler Of The World, who is owned in partnership with Al Shaqab Racing, was priced sensibly to give him a decent chance of success. He didn't appear until the April of his 3-year-old season, with Aidan O'Brien joking after his Derby victory that he was almost frightened to run a colt given such a name. But his G3 Chester vase win on only his second start led to Classic glory, which was followed at four by victory in the G2 Qatar Prix Foy over Flintshire (GB).
Number catalogued: Goffs 7, Tattersalls 3, Arqana 1
SEA THE MOON (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire})
Lanwades Stud – £15,000
Sea The Moon's 11-length romp in the G1 Deutsches Derby was one of the highlights of a banner year for the first crop of Sea The Stars in 2014. Unbeaten in his first four starts, which included the G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen, Sea The Moon looked a highly exciting individual but sadly injury curtailed his career after his second-place finish in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden. Hailing from a high-class German family––his dam Sanwa (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) is a full-sister to Classic winners Samum (Ger), Schiaparelli (Ger) and Salve Regina (Ger)––Sea The Moon was well supported with 102 mares.
Number catalogued: Goffs 4, Tattersalls 21, Arqana 3
SLADE POWER (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB})
Kildangan Stud – €20,000
The benefits of racing older sprinters were perfectly illustrated by the Power family's homebred Slade Power, who won a maiden at two, a Listed race at three, and went on to claim six Group races at four and five for his trainer 'Fast Eddie' Lynam. Slade Power's highest-profile victories came in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. and G1 Darley July Cup and he covered 138 mares in his first season standing for Darley.
Number catalogued: Goffs 19, Tattersalls 16
SOMMERABEND (GB) (Shamardal)
Haras de Saint Arnoult – €3,500
Yet another to have had a long and honourable racing career, Sommerabend raced until he was seven, winning nine times, including the G2 Grosser Europa Meile and G2 Prix du Muguet on one of his five successful forays to France. From a strong German black-type family and out of the Listed-winning Monsun (Ger) mare Sommernacht (Ger), he should sire some decent racehorses in time from his base at Larissa Kneip's Haras de Saint Arnoult.
Number catalogued: Arqana 5
TORONADO (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire})
National Stud – £15,000
A top-class galloper at two, three and four, Toronado was unbeaten in three starts as a juvenile, which included the G2 Champagne S., and scored twice in Group 1 company over a mile in Sussex S. and Queen Anne S. The 139 mares which he covered in his first book stand testament to the welcome he was given by breeders when retired by Al Shaqab Racing to stand at the National Stud and he is thus strongly represented throughout the sales of the next few weeks.
Number catalogued: Goffs 8, Tattersalls 41, Arqana 3
WAR COMMAND (War Front)
Coolmore Stud – €15,000
Declaration Of War had already advertised the prowess of Claiborne's War Front to a European audience and War Command further enhanced his reputation, winning four of his five races as a 2-year-old including that all-important Royal Ascot triumph in the G2 Coventry S. and later the G1 Dubai Dewhurst S. That proved to be his final victory, with a fourth-place finish behind Kingman in the St. James's Palace Stakes being the pick of his 3-year-old form. It will be no surprise to see some precocious youngsters among the offspring of the 124 mares he covered at Coolmore in 2015.
Number catalogued: Goffs 24, Tattersalls 24, Arqana 2
XTENSION (Ire) (Xaar {GB})
A classy juvenile with a runner-up finish in the G2 Coventry S. and victory in the G2 Vintage S. to his name, that was only the beginning of the Xtension story. After placing in both the G1 2,000 Guineas and G1 Prix Jean Prat, he was exported to Hong Kong and continued to race with distinction for three more seasons, twice winning the G1 BMW Champions Mile at Sha Tin. He returned to Ireland to stand alongside fellow freshman Moohaajim (Ire) at Rathbarry Stud and covered around 30 mares.
Number catalogued: Goffs 12
And Also…
Galileo's sons MAGICIAN (Ire) and KINGSBARNS (Ire) retired to Coolmore's American and Irish farms respectively in 2015. The G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas and GI Breeders' Cup Turf winner Magician, who started his career at Ashford Stud for $12,500, has one foal at Goffs (lot 758) and another at Tattersalls (lot 558), while G1 Racing Post Trophy winner Kingsbarns, who was €6,000 during his one season in Ireland, has one foal catalogued at Goffs (lot 292).
ALBAASIL (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), BURWAAZ (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and MR MEDICI (IRE) (Medicean {GB}) also retired to stud in England in 2015 but are not represented by foals at the forthcoming sales.
