Frank Gillespie's The Grey Gatsby (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) will contest the G1 Juddmonte International at York for the third time next Wednesday, according to trainer Kevin Ryan. The 5-year-old finished second to dual Derby winner Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the 2014 renewal after winning that year's G1 Prix du Jockey Club, and he was third last year behind upset winner Arabian Queen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Cartier Horse of the Year Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}).
“The Grey Gatsby is on target for the Juddmonte,” Ryan confirmed. “He's in good order and we are hoping the weather stays fair and we get some good, fast ground.”
The Grey Gatsby has failed to find the winner's enclosure since turning the tables on Australia in the G1 Irish Champion S. almost two years ago, but has been placed at Group 1 level four times in the interim. He was last seen finishing second to Big Orange (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) in the G2 Princess of Wales's S. at Newmarket July 7.
“He has run well in the last two years and has never run a bad race at York,” Ryan noted. “We are hopeful that he can be competitive again.”
