Toast of New York (Thewayyouare–Claire Soleil, by Syncline), the 2014 $2-million G2 UAE Derby winner who went within a nose of upsetting last year's GI Breeders' Cup Classic, has been retired from racing and will enter stud in Qatar in 2016.

Bred in Kentucky by Frank and Jackie Ramos's Ashleigh Stud, Toast of New York was purchased for $35,000 as a Keeneland January yearling in early 2012 and won back-to-back starts over the Wolverhampton all-weather by a combined 28 lengths before surprising his rivals in the 1900-meter UAE Derby in his first start of 2014. After being considered for the GI Kentucky Derby and G1 Investec Derby, Toast of New York was unplaced behind Mr Speaker (Pulpit) and Adelaide (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the inaugural GI Belmont Derby, but was runner-up to Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}) in the GI TVG Pacific Classic in its final Polytrack renewal last August prior to his narrow defeat at the hands of Bayern in the Classic.

With an eye on a return to Meydan, this time for the G1 Dubai World Cup, Sheikh Joann al Thani's Al Shaqab Racing purchased Toast of New York from his previous owner Michael Buckley, but the colt suffered a soft tissue injury preparing for a clash in that race with California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) and never fully recovered.

Nasser Al Kaabi, General Manager of the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club, commented “Toast of New York was a fantastic racehorse and it is sad that his career was cut short but we are obviously delighted that he will be standing as a stallion in Qatar. He will be managed by the QREC. Toast of New York will further enhance our evolving breeding industry.”

Trainer Jamie Osborne commented: “Toast's retirement from racing has brought down the curtain on a wonderfully exciting and rewarding adventure for me and my team. He was a talented and charismatic race horse who has given life long memories to so many.”

A paternal grandson of Kingmambo, Toast of New York's second dam is Claire Marine (Ire) (What a Guest {Ire}), multiple Group 3 placed in France before taking the GI Matriarch S., GI Beverly Hills H. and the Beverly D. S.–ungraded at the time–in the United States. He retires with a record of 8-3-3-0 and earnings of $2,343,115.
