ARCADIA, Ca – The European Breeders' Cup contingent looked quite at home on another cloudy and cool morning at Santa Anita Tuesday.
Just a few minutes short of 7:30 a.m., Dutch Connection (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) (Mile), Home of the Brave (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) (Turf Sprint), Limato (Ire) (Mile) (Tagula {Ire}), Queen's Trust (GB) (Dansili {GB}) (Filly & Mare Turf) and Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (Turf) were walked out onto the main track and made their way to the turf course.
Japan's Nuovo Record (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) (F/M Turf), equipped with matching green blinkers and front wraps, followed suit and joined the quintet for some light training on the lawn while the main track was being harrowed.
There was no shortage of familiar faces lined up while taking in the action from the outdoor area on the trackside breakfast marquee. Darley's Jimmy Bell and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin looked on as Classic contender Frosted (Tapit) galloped. Owner Mick Ruis kept a close eye on the Juvenile Fillies-bound Union Strike (Union Rags) while West Point front man Terry Finley monitored his ageless Turf entrant Twilight Eclipse (Purim). Trainers Dale Romans and Dallas Stewart were also spotted at the popular destination spot as well.
Conditioner Larry Jones, meanwhile, had a much closer view of the action aboard I'm a Chatterbox (Munnings) (Distaff) as did trainer Rudy Rodriguez, in the irons on Jamyson 'n Ginger (Bernardini) (Juvenile Fillies). The latter certainly created some buzz with a 15 1/4-length maiden win in the Belmont slop Oct. 9, good for a 103 Beyer Speed Figure.
Former Breeders' Cup-winning jockey turned trainer Joseph O'Brien led out Intricately (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) aboard a stable pony. The G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine, a bit reluctant to head out after awaiting the track re-opening by the gap, walked and then cantered for a circuit with the trainer's younger brother Donnacha aboard. Both father and son proved to be in high demand with the media on the backstretch as they prepare to go head-to-head in Friday's Juvenile Fillies Turf. The elder O'Brien's Breeders' Cup dozen are expected to clear quarantine Wednesday afternoon.
Oscar Performance (Kitten's Joy) (Juvenile Turf) and Vyjack (Into Mischief) both caught the eye Tuesday as did Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday), who was back at it a day after breezing a sharp four furlongs on grass.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert pointed out Runhappy (Super Saver) passing by while chatting with reporters on the apron. Baffert will take on last year's Sprint champ with the massive chestnut Dortmund (Big Brown) in the Dirt Mile, who was awfully hard to miss as always while jogging back.
The always accommodating Mark Casse–loaded for bear for this year's Championships headed by defending Mile victress Tepin (Bernstein), was interviewed by XBTV's Millie Ball as training hours began to wind down.
For those who couldn't make it out to Santa Anita in time for Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro)'s pre-dawn gallop, she headlined a big crowd of paddock schoolers as the sun started to escape through the clouds at 9:45 a.m.
