Kathryn the Wise remained undefeated with a dazzling victory in the New York-bred Critical Eye S. A well-bet debut victress over state-breds Nov. 25 at Aqueduct, the homebred crushed a field of Empire-bred first-level allowance foes by 12 lengths Apr. 5 at the Big A and was made the 3-5 chalk to keep it going in this stakes debut. Breaking alertly from her outside draw, the bay attended the pace through a sharp :22.62 quarter and took charge soon after passing a :46.36 half. Spurting clear by five lengths in hand turning for home, the favorite opened up double digits by the furlong grounds and was wrapped up for the final sixteenth to win cantering by six lengths in 1:38.70. Literata (Read the Footnotes) was clearly second-best. The winner's third dam Gold Beauty (Mr. Prospector) was champion sprinter in 1992, and she produced three-time English champion Dayjur (Danzig) as well as Maplejinsky (Nijinsky II), the MGISW dam of champion Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and second dam of MGISW Tale of Ekati (Tale of the Cat).
“She's a really very talented filly,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “She had some issues as a young horse where we just stopped on her and let her get over them. [Owner] Mr. [Lawrence] Goichman has been very patient. He's owned horses for a very long time and he knows the game. He gave the horse plenty of time in order to receive the best care. Here she is, she has so much talent and she's a real pleasure to have in the barn. We figured our strategy on the stretch-out was to not take anything away from her. I told Irad [Ortiz Jr.] to let her be even if she goes a little fast early just get a good forward spot, especially on a muddy track. She had a terrific post position to do that and Irad executed it perfect. She might have went a little quicker in that opening quarter, but he settled her down in the second quarter and she had plenty left as you could see.”
In regards to where the New York bred might appear next, Brown added, “She trains and runs like a horse that can run in open company. We thought that this was a good race for her developmental wise a stakes race against fellow New York-breds but if she keeps developing and training well you'll definitely see her against open company.”
