GI Belmont S. winner Union Rags (Dixie Union–Tempo, by Gone West), sidelined by a suspensory problem 10 days ago, has reportedly been retired. No stud plans have been announced, although owner Phyllis Wyeth's advisor Russell Jones told Dick Jerardi of Philadelphia Daily News that, “This is the right time of the year to be talking to these guys, so she wants to have the word out there that we're moving ahead, that the decision has been made.” Jones was unavailable for comment later, and trainer Michael Matz, when reached by telephone, was unaware of the decision to retire the handsome bay colt. In addition to his victory in the “Test of the Champion,” Union Rags captured the GI Champagne S. and GII Saratoga Special S. in 2011, and won the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. earlier this year.
