War Front Debutante Survives Inquiry to Graduate at Saratoga

Black Canary | Sarah K. Andrew

6th-SAR, $83,000, Msw, 9-2, 2yo, f, 5 1/2fT, 1:03.26, fm.

+BLACK CANARY (f, 2, War Front–Forty Moves {GSP, $198,540}, by Gold Fever) took all of the late play and survived a rough stretch run to narrowly take her debut at Saratoga. Bet down to 9-5, the $425,000 OBS June buy broke well and stalked the pace of Take a Stroll (Stroll) from second through a :22.68 quarter. Moving to tackle that one at the top of the lane, the bay took the lead past the eighth pole, but soon encountered an inside bid from Orecchiette (Harlan's Holiday). The two of them dueled an exchanged several bumps from there with Black Canary eventually prevailing by a short head in 1:03.26. An inquiry and an objection were posted, but it appeared as though Orecchiette made first contact, setting off the chain of bumping events, and no change was made. The winner is a half to Joe Toss (Macho Uno), MSP, $175,534. Her dam is a half to GISW Cat Moves (Tale of the Cat) and the dam of GISW & G1SP Hootenanny (Quality Road). Second dam Dance Teacher (Smarten) was a GISW as well. She was bought by Justin Casse after breezing :10 flat while the agent was at Royal Ascot, as originally reported in the TDN by Jessica Martini.

“I think we've been waiting for this race all meet,” Casse told the TDN Friday. “She's been very straightforward and professional from the start. I think she might've hung a little bit and that's why the Pletcher horse was able to gain ground up the rail. I think it's a good learning experience and I think we're all excited about what she can potentially do.” Casse went on to call the experience of placing a winning bid from Royal Ascot “surreal”, adding: “It was only the second day that I'd ever been there. I was able to secure what I had believed was the best horse in the sale, and then of course for her to win first time out at Saratoga, it obviously justifies the purchase price and the attention she garnered.” Sales History: $110,000 RNA Ylg '15 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $49,800. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
