War Front Exacta in Galorette

Cambodia | MJC/Jim McCue

Able to work out a perfect trip from a wide gate off a soft pace, the progressive Cambodia led home a 1-2 finish for her sensational sire in Saturday's GIII Gallorette S. at Old Hilltop.

Away in good order from gate 10, Cambodia showed enough early speed to sit just off the flank of Come to Mischief (Into Mischief), a complete no-hoper in the win pools and entered in the Gallorette to help set things up for her fractionally more accomplished stable mate Laur Net (Strong Hope). Favored Elysea's World dropped out to the tail of the field, and her chances were done no favors by a pedestrian pace of :49.78 to the half-mile and 1:14.31 for six furlongs. Cambodia, poised throughout beneath Florent Geroux, pounced on the overmatched front-runner at the three-sixteenths and although On Leave had every shot down towards the inside, Cambodia parlayed her tactical advantage into a soft win. Elysea's World rallied down the center of the track and was along for third.

“She was very sharp from the gate,” the victorious rider commented. “We [were] in a great spot just off the horse on the lead. I kept her relaxed and turning for home she responded very well.”

A smart allowance winner at the Fair Grounds to make it three straight in December, Cambodia rounded out the triple in a trio of listed events, including behind Danilovna (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) in a yielding-ground renewal of the Dahlia S. Apr. 22.

Pedigree Notes:

Cambodia is the 60th black-type winner and 33rd graded winner for his Claiborne Farm-based sire, who sires 10.6% stakes winners to foals of racing age and a remarkable 15.1% when taken as a ratio to number of starters to date. Cambodia's dam is a winning half-sister to Overarching (Arch), the three-time Equus Award-winning sprinter in South Africa, as well as to GSW Temeraine (Arch) and the stakes-winners Dead Red (Out of Place) and Alone at Last (Quiet American). Cambodia was bred by Don Robinson's Winter Quarter Farm in partnership with Maverick Productions, the breeding operation of Robinson's long-time friend and business associate, the late Eric Kronfeld, best known for having bred future Hall of Famer Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}). Sassifaction was offered by Winter Quarter as part of the Kronfeld dispersal at Keeneland November in 2013, when she was purchased by Gainesway in foal to Blame for $47,000. Sassifaction is the dam of 2-year-old colt Honor Strike (To Honor and Serve) and a yearling filly by Afleet Alex. She was most recently bred to Karakontie (Jpn).
