Waterway Run, winner of the 2012 G3 Oh So Sharp S. at Newmarket, was narrowly beaten when second in her first U.S. outings for trainer Chad Brown. She was beaten a neck in a Feb. 7 optional claimer at Gulfstream and missed by just a nose in the Mar. 8 GIII Hillsborough S. last time out. The bay filly settled just off the pace behind fractions of :24.21 and :48.15. She bullied her way between rivals at the top of the lane and forged to the lead in the final sixteenth and outfinished Orion Moon for a determined victory. “I had a very good trip,” said winning rider Jose Lezcano. “She broke good, and I got the position I wanted. She’s the kind of filly who will do whatever you ask her. She held her position nicely all the way and when I said, ‘Go,’ she went and won the race.” Brown added, “It looked like she was in tight quarters for most of the race and [Lezcano] just bided his time. When she got in the clear she showed the kick that she has; we were very pleased with the performance and the ride. The distance was key for her. A mile or a mile and a sixteenth is her game.”
