Who Do You Admire: Craig Fravel

Craig Fravel | Breeders' Cup

The following is part of a series in which we have posed the question above to a number of racing industry participants. The only rule is that you cannot choose your own boss.

CRAIG FRAVEL: Mike Smith

While I am a big admirer of owners, breeders and racing executives, for me the heart and soul of racing is the action on the racetrack and particularly the action that takes place on the grandest stages. It probably goes without saying that winning 26 Breeders' Cup races over a career is an accomplishment that commands respect. Mike Smith has, as we know, won more Breeders' Cup races than any other jockey and has brought us thrills with victories in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and the Belmont—not to mention the Irish 2000 Guineas. His rides on Arrogate and Zenyatta stand out in our memories as classics in every way. Most importantly, Mike always has a ready smile for the fans and is an enthusiastic supporter of our great game. I am not sure the word `no' is part of his vocabulary. He is always available for marketing initiatives, charitable endeavors and media requests. He also has a great touch with the next generation and has on many occasions given my daughter Ireland his goggles at the end of a historic race, a gesture she will always remember. While we admire success, achievement and passion, I believe kindness is most admirable and Mike displays that unfailingly. To submit your own reply to our 'Admire' series, email suefinley@thetdn.com
