The last time a mare by global sire Street Cry (Ire) went for 20 consecutive race wins, champion mare Zenyatta fell short. On Saturday at Royal Randwick, Australian Horse of the Year Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) will be looking to go 20 on the bounce and create her own piece of history in the G1 Colgate Optic White S. (1600m).
A winner 12 months prior in the race when defeating Godolphin's pair of Hauraki (Aus) and It's Somewhat, Winx will take on a different line up this year, highlighted by last start G2 Chelmsford S. runner-up Red Excitement (Aus) (Excites {Aus}), who showed daring tactics last time out, going out many lengths clear, only to be run down late by the glamour mare.
While it's always hard to see Winx being defeated, trainer Chris Waller will saddle up a further three runners in the field taking his total to five of the nine, while Pat Webster's last start G2 Tramway S. winner Happy Clapper (Aus) (Teofilo {Ire}) looks capable of giving the progeny of the Darley stallions a one-two finish.
Waller's second stringer is the highly talented and very capable Group 1 winner Foxplay (Aus) (Foxwedge {Aus}). Appearing to have taken a while to get over her first-up effort when second to Winx almost a month back, the Brenton Avdulla-ridden grey is a winner over the Randwick mile, and although a win looks unlikely, she will surely play a role in the finish.
