'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard Salloom (Authentic) was expected to take all the beating in Friday's Listed Dubai Road to the Kentucky Derby (ex Al Bastakiya), but as he did prior to his would-be debut back in December, he was badly behaved at the gates and busted through before being apprehended and not permitted to take part.
A field of 11 was ultimately loaded and Jim and Claire Ltd's Brotherly Love (GB) (Zoustar {Aus})–the half-brother to Jim and Claire Bryce's Heart of Honor (GB) (Honor A. P.), who was just touched off in this race 12 months ago–saved his best for last, as he hit top gear four off the inside with time ticking away to be along in the shades of the post.
Slowly into stride as has become his custom, the 40,000gns Tattersalls October yearling purchase raced behind midfield down the back and was under a busy Saffie Osborne ride, appearing to be spinning his wheels with fully five furlongs ahead of them.
But just like Heart of Honor needs to be kept after, so, too, does Brotherly Love, and he finally began to get interested when he was pulled out of the kickback approaching the 600-meter marker. Further warming to the task with the Meydan straight looming, he still had it all to do as longtime leader Duke of Immatin (Gun Runner) was not laying down up front, but Brotherly Love kept on plugging away to find the line in the final three or four jumps. Lino Padrino (Uncle Lino) just missed second, while Sary Shayan (Constitution) flashed home to be fourth.
The victory is worth 20 points on the Euro/Middle East Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Fifth in a single appearance over the Kempton all-weather last October, Brotherly Love was runner-up to Godolphin's impressive Devon Island (Practical Joke) in two tries over 1600 meters here in November and December. A facile maiden winner Jan. 9, Brotherly Love was back on two weeks' rest for the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas, but never reached contention when well-beaten to Six Speed (Not This Time).
“He's becoming like his brother in ability and demeanor,” said the winning rider. “They both like making life difficult for me, but when I came out into the straight and he switched leads I always felt like I was going to pick them up. He stays all day, this horse, and has a lot of class.
“It was gutting to get pipped in this race last year with Heart of Honor so it's great to avenge that for Jim and Claire, it's very special for them. That's Dad [trainer Jamie Osborne]'s sixth winner of the Carnival and I'm not sure people realise how hard that is to do.”
“Sweet revenge!” added Osborne Senior. “Last year we were very frustrated so to avenge that with Heart Of Honor's little brother is pretty incredible really.”
Pedigree Notes:
Brotherly Love is the 77th worldwide stakes winner for his sire and becomes the 80th stakes winner from a daughter of the late Scat Daddy.
A Group 1-winner and champion of her generation in Chile, Ruby Love was purchased by David Redvers for $90,000 carrying the foal that would become Heart of Honor at the 2021 Keeneland November Sale.
Desperately unlucky to lose by a zop in last year's G2 UAE Derby, Heart of Honor was an impressive winner of the Listed The Entisaar in December and a latest third in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge over this same 1900-meter trip. Having skipped the Saudi Cup meeting, Heart of Honor is a candidate for next weekend's Super Saturday program and the G1 Dubai World Cup the following month.
Ruby Love is also responsible for the 2-year-old filly Hart Of the Matter (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}), an 80,000gns weanling at Tattersalls November in 2024, and a yearling colt by Kameko.
