More than 180 retired racehorses have entered New Vocations Adoption Program at Mereworth Farm since the new facility officially opened Apr. 15, 2016, the organization announced Wednesday. Of the horses served, 120 were adopted into homes and new careers, while the remainder are being rehabilitated or in transitional training prior to being put up for adoption. To date, over 450 horses have entered the program through all its facilities.
“We are very thankful for everyone who has supported the capital campaign,” said New Vocations Program Director Anna Ford. “Our team has done an amazing job keeping the day-to-day operations going amid constant construction at the new facility. We have already seen a significant increase in the number of horses we can take. Once complete, we look forward to focusing solely on helping as many horses as possible transition into second careers.”
The New Vocations Capital Campaign was launched in 2015 to build the country's racehorse retraining and adoption facility. In addition to the new facility, New Vocations utilizes additional barn space and pastures on Mereworth Farm to provide rehabilitation for the horses entering the program with injuries.
The public is welcome to tour the new facility during an Open Barn and BBQ Apr. 28 that will include dinner, live music and demonstrations. For ticket or further information, visit www.newvocations.org.
