Cape Thoroughbred Sales's Emperor's Palace National Yearling Sale took place on Friday evening, with a select group of 159 yearlings going under the hammer. Those sold collectively fetched R41,650,000 ($3,169,276). The average was down 15.8% at R317,939 ($24,192) and the median dropped 22.2% to R175,000 ($13,316).
Top billing went to a colt by South Africa's champion sire Dynasty (SAf), who was the third-last horse through the ring and was hammered down to Jehan Malherbe's Form Bloodstock, bidding over the phone, for R3,800,000 ($289,153). Lot 157, consigned by Highlands Farm Stud, is a full-brother to triple Group 1 winner Jackson (SAf) and a pair of Group 3 winners, and traces back to the famed Sam-Son Farm family of Smart Strike and Dance Smartly.
The sale's highest-priced filly was a R2,600,000 ($197,842) daughter of another champion sire in Captain Al (SAf). Lot 118 was consigned by Klawervlei Stud and bought by Rainbow Beach Trading, and is a full to the stakes-placed Captain's Causeway (SAf), they being out of the Australian-bred Giant's Causeway mare Giant's Bounty (SAf).
Klawervlei was the seller of six of the nine yearlings to fetch R1,000,000-plus, which also included a R1,700,000 ($129,358) Captain Al filly. Klawervlei was leading vendor with 30 sold for R15,775,000 ($1,200,368) at an average of R525,833 ($40,012), while Mayfair Speculators was leading buyer with 15 secured for R7,115,000 ($541,402).
