Scarlet Billows Tops Great Southern

Scarlet Billows | Inglis

Woodside Park shuttle sire Cable Bay (GB) had a high-class mare added to his first Australian book when agent Damon Gabbedy of Belmont Bloodstock snapped up Group 3 winner Scarlet Billows (Aus) (Street Boss) (lot 497) for a session-topping A$460,000 at Inglis's Great Southern Sale on Tuesday. The 6-year-old maiden mare, winner of the G3 Hong Kong Jockey Club S., was offered by John Richards of Galadi Holdings.

“This year's broodmare sales results told us that young group-winning mares are very hard to find, and in Scarlet Billows I think the new owners have found a fantastic prospect,” said Gabbedy, who was acting on behalf of an unnamed client. “She's a tough, sound, group-winning mare which really ticks all the boxes.”

Inglis's Victorian Bloodstock Manager Simon Vivian said of Scarlet Billows, which was the highest price achieved at the sale since 2009, “Scarlet Billows was a massive result and we're so pleased for John Richards. We greatly appreciate his support and we're thrilled with the result we were able to achieve for him.”

Cable Bay, a dual group-winning sprinter, is based at Highclere Stud in the UK and had his first foals born this year.

The slightly increased mare portion of the Great Southern Sale saw the buyback rate increase while other key figures posted positives. A total of 207 mares were sold on the day (27.9% passed in) compared to 200 sold (20.6% passed in) on the same day last year. The gross of A$4,084,800 surpassed last year's A$2,700,000, while the average climbed 46.2% to A$19,733, and the median was up 9% to A$6,000.

Gabbedy also signed for the day's second-highest priced mare, the A$270,000 Golden Penny (Aus) (Blevic {Aus}) (lot 678). The 9-year-old was offered carrying her third foal, by Written Tycoon (Aus).

A pair of mares sold for A$160,000 on the day: Al Afraah (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) (lot 563), an unplaced mare in foal to I Am Invincible (Aus) bought by Sheamus Mills; and the stakes-placed 5-year-old maiden mare Fine Mist (Aus) (Grand Journey) (lot 880), bought by Kirkby Miller Holdings.

The fourth and final session of the Great Southern Sale begins on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with a mix of yearlings, racing stock and unbroken stock on offer.
