Cameron praises British racing industry on Newmarket visit
Prime Minister David Cameron made an unexpected visit to the Newmarket gallops Thursday morning and met with several local professionals in a bid to get some first-hand knowledge of the thoroughbred industry. According to Racing Post, he had been staying with his former schoolmate and bloodstock agent Tom Goff. In a video released later in the day, the Downing Street resident praised the sector’s assets, saying, “British racing is a massive success story and I wanted to come, see and hear about it for myself.” Cameron reminded that horseracing is the second most popular sport in Great Britain, with a total value of £3 billion and over 100,000 employment.
“One of the themes of what I’ve been talking about is how we need to play to our national successes,” Cameron continued. “This is a success story, so I want to make sure it’s continued. I’m meeting with some trainers and hearing their views about how we make sure that this great industry, a lot of it is based here in Newmarket, goes from strength to strength.” The Prime Minister watched John Gosden’s first lot exercise on Warren Hill, in company with Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson and Newmarket MP Matt Hancock.
