Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens remains in guarded condition in the intensive care unit of a south Florida hospital, his son, Jimmy, said Wednesday afternoon.

Jerkens, 85, was admitted to Aventura Hospital and Medical Center Feb. 28 with a severe infection. He showed some improvement after being treated with antibiotics, but his condition has not changed in the past week.

“All vital signs are still pretty good, but he still hasn’t progressed beyond a semi-conscious state,” Jimmy Jerkens said.

Jerkens is in his 66th year as a head trainer and ranks 11th in career victories and 14th in purse money earned. The Long Island native was based in New York through 2013, but remained in Florida following the conclusion of the Gulfstream Park’s 2013-14 Championship Meet.
