Evergreen marathoner Brown Panther (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}), ruled out of Royal Ascot last month after being injured, is back in training, according to trainer Tom Dascombe.
“He's being ridden now, as well as swimming, but he probably won't start cantering until next week,” Dascombe said. “We are looking at six or seven weeks after that [before he runs], so let's see how he progresses.”
The Michael Owen and Andrew Black colorbearer, who has traveled to compete in such prestigious events as the G1 Melbourne Cup and GI Breeders' Cup Turf, recorded his most important win in last year's G1 Irish St Leger, and opened his 7-year-old campaign this year with a win in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup before finishing second to subsequent G2 Hardwicke S. scorer Snow Sky (GB) (Nayef) in the G2 Yorkshire Cup May 15. Dascombe said the goal is to defend his Irish Leger title, but he admitted timing is tight.
“The Irish St Leger is the race we want to go for, obviously, but we'll just have to wait and see,” he said. “He won't be able to run before then, anyway.”
