Trainer John Gosden has said he is “very pleased” with G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Coral-Eclipse winner Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) ahead of the 3-year-old's assignment in Saturday's G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot. The Anthony Oppenheimer homebred looks to become just the fourth horse to complete the Derby-Eclipse-King George treble in the same year, and the first since Galileo (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) in 2001 to complete the Derby-King George double.
“He's fine and I'm very pleased with him. He's taken the Eclipse very well,” Gosden said. “Taking the decision to go forward in the Eclipse was the right decision. He was very relaxed in front and he finished the race well.”
Golden Horn will make just his sixth start in the King George–he is thus far unbeaten–but Gosden said the colt has matured recently.
“We always thought he was a good, proper horse, but he just seems that much more streetwise, harder and tougher now,” the conditioner explained. “He's filled out since the Eclipse and his weight is back where I wanted. We're not being faint-hearted with him. We're trying to go the tough route.”
