Richard Wayman has been appointed chief operating officer of the British Horseracing Authority. Wayman will be responsible for racing's fixture list, race planning, handicapping, and the BHA's relationship with Weatherbys and many of the company's corporate service functions, including its finance team, as well as the oversight and delivery of the BHA's development program for the next 18 months. Wayman's start date is not yet confirmed, and BHA Chief Executive Nick Rust will cover those responsibilities in the interim. Wayman had been chief executive of the Racehorse Owners Association since 2012 and previously worked at the BHA as well as for its predecessor, the British Horseracing Board.
“There were a number of very strong candidates for this crucial role at the heart of the BHA–and the sport– but Richard stood out for his deep affinity with British racing, and knowledge and understanding of its varied stakeholders and customers,” said Rust. “The fixture list, and the development of an associated holistic race program, have been identified as being pivotal to the sport's progress in the coming years, and will be Richard's key priorities, as well as working alongside others to help deliver a brighter future for British racing.”
